This was the first expedition to undertake any actual climbing on Everest. Additionally, oxygen cylinders were brought along for the first time. After the SS Caledonia docked in Aden, George Mallory writes to his climbing friend Raymond Bicknell on 13th March 1922, "En route as you see with 120 cylinders of oxygen!"

Despite the lack of summit success, the Expedition established a new world altitude record of 8323m, set by George Finch and Geoffrey Bruce.
